Klaviyo send time optimisation uses each subscriber’s past engagement to predict when they are most likely to open and click, then staggers delivery instead of blasting everyone at one fixed time. Used well, it can lift open and click rates by meeting people when they are actually paying attention.

It is not a guaranteed win for every send though. For time-sensitive launches, flash sales or anything tied to a fixed moment, a controlled single send time often beats predictive delivery. We test send time optimisation against your goals rather than switching it on and assuming it works.

Klaviyo smart sending and frequency

Smart sending is Klaviyo’s built-in guardrail against over-emailing. By default it skips anyone who has already received an email in the last 16 hours, counting both campaigns and flows so customers are not bombarded when several messages land at once. The SMS and push window defaults to 24 hours.

It is powerful but it has to be managed. Skipped messages are not rescheduled, so a clumsy setup can silently suppress important flow emails or even cancel an A/B test. We set smart sending windows, frequency rules and exclusions deliberately, so the right messages get through and your list never feels spammed.

Why sending more emails is not the answer

Plenty of agencies will promise to send you more campaigns. More volume feels like more value but it is one of the fastest ways to wreck an email programme. Every send to a disengaged audience teaches mailbox providers that your email is unwanted and that damages inbox placement for everyone on your list.

This is exactly why Klaviyo builds in smart sending and why send frequency has to be managed rather than maximised. The goal is not more emails. It is more revenue from emails people are genuinely pleased to receive.
