Your audience.
Some audiences are in high demand from advertisers, so reaching them costs more. Very narrow audiences can also be expensive because Meta has fewer people to show your ads to.
"How much do Facebook ads cost?" is one of the first questions we get asked. The honest answer is that it depends, but that is not much use when you are trying to set a budget. So this guide breaks it down properly.
There are two costs to running Meta ads. The first is your ad spend, which you pay to Meta. The second is management, which you pay to whoever runs the campaigns, whether that is you, a freelancer or an agency. Once you understand both, it is much easier to compare quotes and spot good value.
Short answer: you set your own ad budget with Meta. Climb & Conquer's Meta ads management starts from £600 a month plus VAT, with ad spend paid separately.

Meta does not have a price list. You set a daily or lifetime budget and Meta spends it for you by entering your ads into an auction every time someone could see one. You can stop or change your budget whenever you like.
You will usually be charged per 1,000 impressions (CPM) or per click, depending on your settings. Whatever you are charged for, the numbers that matter for your business are:
Some audiences are in high demand from advertisers, so reaching them costs more. Very narrow audiences can also be expensive because Meta has fewer people to show your ads to.
Campaigns optimised for leads or sales usually cost more per impression than awareness campaigns, because Meta is looking for people more likely to act. They are usually far better value per result.
Costs tend to rise around Black Friday and Christmas as more businesses compete for attention. For The Little Bumble Co., we planned around that period and still more than doubled purchases and revenue in December compared with November, with no change in budget.
Ads people engage with tend to win auctions more cheaply. Meta's ad relevance diagnostics show how yours compare with competitors. Read our relevance diagnostics guide
If Meta cannot see your conversions, it cannot learn who is likely to convert. Clean Pixel and Conversions API data makes a real difference. Read our Pixel and Conversions API guide
Too many ad sets chasing the same people means each one learns slowly. Consolidating campaigns was one of the changes that helped Elite Energy cut its total cost per lead by 38%.
The most common mistake is spreading a small budget across too many campaigns. Each ad set needs enough results to get through Meta's learning phase. If it does not, it never settles and costs stay high. Read about the learning phase
A simple way to think about it is to work backwards from what a customer is worth to you.
Illustrative numbers only. These are not client figures or benchmarks.
A local installer knows that:
That means they can afford up to £50 per lead (£500 divided by 10 leads). If they want 20 leads a month, they need an ad budget of about £1,000 a month at that cost per lead. On top of that, they would pay a management fee if they use an agency.
If the agency then brings the cost per lead down to £40, the same £1,000 brings in 25 leads. That is the kind of improvement good management should pay for.
Management covers everything that goes into making the ad spend work: strategy, setup, targeting, creative, testing, tracking and reporting. You have three main options.
| Cost: | Good for: | Watch out for: | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | no fee, just your time | very small budgets, testing the water or businesses with Meta experience in-house | boosted posts. They are easy, but they rarely get the same results as campaigns built in Ads Manager. Why you shouldn't just boost posts |
| A freelancer | usually lower than an agency | smaller accounts that need hands-on help | who makes the creative, who covers holidays and how much time they have for your account |
| An agency | a monthly fee | businesses that want strategy, creative, tracking and testing handled by a team | being passed between account managers who never touch your campaigns |

We sit between a freelancer and a traditional agency, taking the best of both.

If your ads send people to a weak page, you may need to budget for improving it.
Leads need following up quickly. Slow follow-up wastes good ad spend.
The first few weeks are about gathering data. Expect results to improve over time rather than overnight.

No. Both run through Meta Ads Manager, so one campaign can cover Facebook and Instagram.
Boosting is quick, but it gives you far less control over targeting and goals. A properly built campaign in Ads Manager usually gets more from the same budget.
It depends on what a customer is worth to you. Work backwards from your average sale value and close rate, as in the worked example above.
Yes. Many clients start on Base Camp and move up as results grow.
Useful data usually comes in the first few weeks. Improving results takes ongoing testing. Timing depends on your budget, audience and sales cycle.
No. There are no contracts with Climb & Conquer.
You set the daily or lifetime budget yourself, so there is no fixed price. Meta lets you start with a small daily budget. A budget that is too small can take a long time to gather useful data, so work it out from the cost per lead you can afford.
It is your daily budget multiplied by seven, or whatever lifetime budget you set. You can pause or change it at any time. Our management fee is monthly, from £600 a month plus VAT.
That is your CPM. It changes with your audience, the time of year, your placements and how much competition there is for the same people. We do not publish an average because it varies so much between accounts.
You pay Meta directly for the ad spend, usually by card. Meta charges as your ads run, based on the budget you set. Our fee is separate, so you can always see exactly what went to Meta.
It can be, if the numbers work. Start with what a customer is worth to you and how many leads turn into sales, then check the cost per lead you can afford. The worked example in this guide shows how.
Common reasons are creative fatigue, a narrow audience, more competition at busy times of year or tracking that has stopped working. Our Meta ads audit checklist helps you find the cause.
Not one that can predict your results. A better approach is to work backwards from your average sale value and close rate, as in our worked example.
